THE EXCITEMENT/ANTICIPATION IS HERE!
By the time you read this, the Heard Island DXpedition should
have started or is about to start. The team is reportedly on the
island, and some of the beacons are active. The NCDXF beacon will
run from the island as VK0IR with an R5 vertical. It will
transmit on 14.100, 18.110, 21.150, 24.930 and 28.200 MHz. The
beacon transmits for ten seconds on each band every three
minutes. The VK0IR transmission on twenty meters is at one minute
and ten seconds after the hour and every three minutes after
that. The transmissions on the other bands follow every ten
seconds with the ten meter transmission starting at one minute
and fifty seconds after the hour and every three minutes after
that. On each frequency, it sends VK0IR in CW at 100W, then 1
second long steady tones at 100, 10, 1 and 0.1 W and then moves
to the next higher frequency. The latest beacon information is
available from WWW.NCDXF.ORG. Lastly, I would like to make a
pitch for the DXpedition team. PLEASE, PLEASE and PLEASE during
the operation listen to the operators request and DO NOT, DO NOT,
and DO NOT transmit on their transmit frequencies. The important
thing is to "LISTEN AND THINK" before doing. A lot of
money has been invested in this operation, and I do believe
everyone will have a chance to work them. Good luck in the
pile-up... 73 de Tedd KB8NW ADDED NOTE: OPDX InterNet Subscribers
will receive additional information on the operation.
8P, BARBADOS. Glenn, VA3DX, will
be going to Barbados once again for this year's 160 Meters CQWW
CW Contest. He will arrive there on January 19th, and will be
active for 2 weeks as 8P9DX (he has held this call since 1987).
He will be active on all bands, but will concentrate on the lower
bands, mainly on CW and especially on 160 meters. He plans to
make this a serious effort in the contest trying to beat last
year's score. He is hoping that someone in Idaho will call him in
this year's contest. QSL via VE3ICR, Glenn Wyant, 74 Highland
Ave., St.Catharines, Ontario, L2R-4J1, Canada.
ANTARCTICA ACTIVITY. Several
stations have been reported active. Bob, K4MZU, suggests to keep
on the lookout for the following:
KC4/KL7RL - Operator Art from Patriot Hills will be
looking for Europe on Wednesdays 2000 and 2100z 14260
kHz. Also, Sundays at 1700/1800z and 2000/2100z on 14260
kHz.
VK0MAP - Operator Mike from the South Pole Station is
active 2200-0300z on 14243 or 14270 kHz. Mike's old call
last year was VP8MAP. He is the only VK0 ever licensed
for South Pole. He goes QRT at the end of January.
LU1ZS - Operator Pedro from the Camara Base is active
2300-0100z usually between 14190-240. (En El Espanol)
LU8EYK/z - Operator Jorge, LU4EDL, from the Beyes Base
Camp on Livingston Island can be found daily on 14331 kHz
at 0100z passing family traffic.
CE9MFK - Operator Oswaldo from Sherriff Base is active on
14245 kHz at 0030z. (En El Espanol)
KC4AAC - Location is Palmer Station. Greg, WB7CHV, will
be active soon.
CE9SAC - Operator Juan from Teniente Carvajal Base is
active on 14195 kHz from 2200-0100z.
KC4/KC8CWI- South Pole Station is active on Sat/Sun 20
meters.
JX, JAN MAYEN. Be watching on 80
meters SSB for Per, LA7DFA, who is currently active as JX7DFA
until April. He plans to concentrate on this band during January.
He will be changing his location in February to the western side
of the island. From his new location he will be able to run high
power and with better antennas. He will also concentrate on 80
and 160 meters. QSL via his home callsign or via the bureau.
NEW DXCC COUNTRY??? Joe, K2YJL,
reports reading in a recent issue of Carribbean Magazine,
"that the residents of Nevis will vote later this year to
secede from the union with St. Kitts. If this happens, they will
become the smallest island nation in the Carribbean."
P4, ARUBA. Mike, K4PI will be
active as P49I from January 22-28th. He will be active in the
CQWW 160M CW Contest. Mike states he will also be active before
and after the contest on CW on the lower bands and the WARC
bands. QSL via K4PI. Also, look for Andy, K2LE, to be active at
the end of month or the beginning of February as P4/K2LE. QSL to
CBA.
PJ, ST. EUSTATIUS. Mike, K3UOC,
will be active as PJ5AA from January 24-28th. Activity will be on
all bands plus participation in the CQWW 160 Meter Contest. QSL
to W1AF.
SSTV ACTIVITY. The "DX News
Sheet" reports two stations from Israel, 4X4FD and 4Z4UT
have been active on the 20 meters SSTV frequency.
USI ALERT (OR-new). John, NL7TB,
will attempt to activate the first Oregon saltwater island for
USI (United States Island award program), Haystack Rock at Cannon
Beach, on January 30th around 1930Z (+ - low tide) on 14260 kHz.
Haystack Rock is at 235 ft. high and is the 3rd largest coastal
monolith in the world. KC7KHU will be used with 10-80 meters
capability. This "rock" does not qualify for IOTA, but
the other Haystack at Pacific City does. Operating time and
equipment will be limited due to tidal conditions and the
distance the gear will have to be carried. A wheelchair battery
will power his FT-840. The antenna will be an Outbacker mounted
to a camera tripod! Large stepping stones lead from the beach to
the rock. John had a real "hairy" experience here some
20 years ago, so this revisit has been a long time coming. For a
preview of the rocks on the World-Wide WEB, try the URL address
of: http://www.el.com/To/CannonBeach/
QSL via John's WA address or via InterNet E-mail: nl7tb@owt.com
VP5, TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS.
Joe, K8JP, will once again be active from Hamlet as VP5/K8JP,
February 12-24th. Activity will also include entries in the ARRL
DX CW Contest and the CQWW 160M SSB Contest. During the contests,
he will be signing VP5JP. QSL via K8JP, P.O. Box 59573,
Schaumburg, IL 60159-0573.
XF, REVILLAGIGEDO. Hector,
XE1BEF, is now active as XF4CA and will be there until January
20th. His activity will be on all bands (160-10 meters) on CW/SSB
and RTTY. QSL to home call.
XU, KAMPUCHEA (Cambodia). Mike,
XU6WV, finds time is a real premium and has found there is not
much time for operating. Most of his operation has been on 20 SSB
around 2330-0015z or 1200-1300z. There has been some activity on
the WARC bands. He will be putting up a 40/80 meters vertical
soon. He states that he has RTTY equipment, but this is not a
high priority due to his antenna situation. He is trying to
arrange some free time so he can be active from Kompong Som (on
the ocean) around the CQWW 160 Meters Contest.
ZK, SOUTH COOK ISLAND (HELP WANTED).
Vitaly, VE6JO, will be on vacation in Raratonga from February
22nd to March 10th. He will staying at the Puaikura Reef Hotel.
Vitaly has applied for a licence, but due to a lot of travelling
in Australia prior to his vacation in ZK1, he will not be able to
take any equipment with him. He would like to find a station that
he can use/rent for this period of time. He would like to operate
CW, SSB and RTTY. Any ideas/suggestions will be very much
appreciated and can be direct to Vitaly's InterNet address:
markv@snc-lavalin.com
ZP0, YACYRETA ISLAND (PARAGUAY).
A report from Paraguay states that a group will be operating from
this island located in the Parana River from January 19-26th.
They will be using the callsign ZP0V, and operations will be on
SSB and CW and on 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters.
