3RD ANNUAL W/VE ISLAND CONTEST (by John,
NL7TB). "Just a reminder that the W/VE Island
Contest, sponsored by the US Islands Awards Program, will take
place on August 16 and 17th. We've made some changes and
hopefully made the contest more appealing. We ask that you read
the contest rules carefully, especially when submitting your
entry. Russ, VE6VK, will manage the contest and I will handle the
award certificates and plaques. Please check the USI Website for
the complete contest rules. You won't want to miss this

4L, GEORGIA. Al, 4L5A, states he
will be very active in CQWW 160M CW Contest. He will be using a
Yaesu FT-1000MP and HF2500E amp into a X-Q Quad antenna fixed on
124m tower. He will operate mainly on 1820 kHz. QSL via IK3HHX.
There will be a special color QSL for this contest with a view of
the antenna.
5R8, MALAGASY REPUBLIC. The
"DX News Sheet" reports Maurizio, 5R8FH, is a lay
missionary in South Central Malagasy and is active on 20 and 15
meters with 80 watts and a three element yagi on Europe. QSL via
I1PIN.
5X, UGANDA (IT'S A FIRST!).
Leif, SM0BFJ (QSL Manager for 5X1D), informs OPDX that Gus, 5X1D,
will return to Uganda at the end of January. This time he will
try 2 meter EME operation (this will be the first time in
5X-land). He will run 500 watt into a 17 element yagi. Those
interested to arrange a schedule can write to Gus's E-mail

He will also be active on 6 meter (50.150 MHz) between 1730-1900z
calling CQ with 100 watt with a 3 element yagi. He might do some
work on 80 and 160 meters, but his effort will be on 2 and 6
meter.
BRAZILIAN IOTA ACTIVITY. Look
for Mel Island (IOTA SA-047) to be activated by PY5AA (SSB) and
PQ5L (CW), from February 20-24th. QSL PY5AA via home call and
PQ5L via PP5LL. This island is also good for DIB-24, DFB PR-01
and DFH-PR-01 (first). Look for Bailique Island to be activated
by Mario, PQ8MM, on February 5-9th. Activity will be on SSB 80-10
meters. This island has an IOTA of SA-045 (also good for DIB 35).

DX NEWS LETTER has a new editor
as of January 1, 1997. Uwe, DL9GOA, will be stepping down as
editor and will be replaced by Michael, DJ5AV. Michael is 58
years old, retired and a well known, active DXer. OPDX wishes him
the best in the new position.
EP2DA OPERATION 1967-1971 (Need a card!).
Chris, K4PC, has provided OPDX with the following
information:
"Date: Thu, 16 January One of our local club members
who has traveled abroad, moved to our area abt 2 yrs ago. In
a long chat with him, I found out that he operated in Tehran
under the call EP2DA from 1967-1971. He told me of some of
the contacts, operating conditions, licensing etc. but also
told me that he has a logbook in his possession.
Unfortunately, he only has a small portion of the logbooks
because when he was moved around by his employer, the rest of
the logbooks were lost by the moving company. But the log
that he has had quite a few US calls. I just thought that
maybe there might be a few out there who workd EP2DA who
never got a card for this operation. Ops can QSL with a SASE
to KD2DY Don Alexander, 330 Appalachian Drive, Boone, NC
28607. Don said if he can find them in this partial log, a
QSL will be returned in the SASE. Just thought some DXer's

FRENCH DX NEWS (by F6AJA). Jean,
F6AJA, reports that he has received the logs for FK5M (Matthew
Island) expedition. The QSLs will be ready in the early part of
February and the card will be mailed as soon as possible....
....Gerard, F2JD (ex-5R8EN, S79JD etc..), hopes to get his
Panamanian (HP) licence for this end of January.... Yannick,
F6FYD (exST2YD, T5YD etc..), will be in India (VU) for his
business, starting next week for one year.
J7, DOMINICA. DL3LAR, DL8OBQ and
DL6LAU will be active, February 12th to March 3th including both
ARRL contests and the CQWW 160m SSB Contest. They
"might" use the callsign J75T for all contacts made.
They will have two complete stations with us, including 26m tall
vertical for 160/80/40 meters and a 5 element log-periodic for
14-28 MHz. They might signing FG/homecall for a few days February
10-11th. All QSLs should go to DL6LAU, via the bureau or CBA.
Carsten Esch, DL6LAU, states, "We are thinking about a
stateside QSL-collector for us who might ship us the collected
direct stateside QSLs requests (to save some dollars) on both
sides (AIR MAIL to US is 2US$ here!) any volunteers???"
JD, OGASAWARA. The
"Island/DX News" reports Aki, JD1AMA, is active daily
on 1908 kHz and listening 1826 kHz at his sunrise at 2122z.
KG, GUANTANAMO BAY. Bill/WT4K,
Jan/K4QD and Rusty/KG4AU will be active in the CQ World-Wide RTTY
WPX Contest February 8-9th, as a Multi/Single entry using WT4K's
call KG4GC. QSL to WT4K [ex-KQ4GC] with SASE or through bureau.
Jan/KG4QD and Bill/KG4GC will also be active February 10-14th on
both CW and SSB on all bands.
KP4, PUERTO RICO. Paul, K4UJ (ex
KR4UJ), and Steve, K4WA (ex KR4DL), will operate from KP4 January
22nd through January 27th, including operation in the CQWW 160M
CW Contest. The contest callsign will be KP4/K4UJ; operation
outside the contest on all bands will be KP4/homecall. QSL via
homecall.
MEXICO's HAM CONVENTION. The
Association of Radio Amateurs of the Republic of Mexico (ARARM)
announces the "37th Annual Amateur Radio Convention" to
be held July 10-13, 1997, at the Convention Center in Leon,
Guanajuato. ARARM welcomes international amateur radio visitors
and their families to this event which will include programs on
satellite, DXing, packet radio, emergency radio services, etc. in
addition to a variety of technical seminars and workshops. As
usual, special cultural programs and tours will be available for
all guests of the convention. The convention organizers have
selected the Real de Minas Hotel as the main hotel. For

OCEANIA IOTA DXPEDITION.
Silvano, KB5GL, reports he and three operators will be operating
from Oceania IOTA OC-137 Stradbroke Island, in the Queensland
South Coast Island Group. Operations will begin on Saturday,
March 15th, at 0530z and terminating Monday, March 17th, at
0100z. Activty will be SSB only: 3995, 7065, 14260, 21260 kHz.
Silvano will be operating with his Australian issued callsign of
VK4WGL. The other operators will include: Sergio/VK4GK,
Angelina/VK4AAC and John/VK4WX. QSLs for VK4WGL go to KB5GL's
CBA. All others to the VK4's CBA.
P2, PAPUA NEW GUINEA. The
"DX News Letter", report Dietmar, DL3DXX, and Joerg,
DL8WPX, will head for Misimi Island where they will stay from
February 20th until March 4th. In Papua New Guinea, the team will
be joined by Falk, DK7YY, and Juergen, DL7UFN. A licence has been
promised orally. Emphasis will be put on lowband CW.
PIRATE ALERT! It has been
reported that 8B8KB, worked on 40 meters CW and other
frequencies, was a PIRATE. There is no YB8KAR station. DO NOT
QSL! The IOTA Dxpedition to Tukang Besi Islands has been
rescheduled for March 1997, per Tjok, YB0RX, one of the main
organizers. They will use the callsign 8B8WI.
PJ8, ST. MAARTIN. Ron, ND5S, his
wife Sue, KF5LG, Bill, W8EB, and his wife Dorothy, KB8ZXO, will
be on the island from Feburary 23rd to March 8th, operating as
PJ8/ on all bands CW, SSB and RTTY including the WARC bands. They
will be using the special callsign of PJ8A again for the ARRL DX
Phone Contest the weekend of February 28th through March 2nd.
Please QSL via W9NIP for the contest QSOs and QSL via the home
callsign for the rest of the contacts. Equipment will be the
FT-900CAT that was used by AA8U for his S. Cook trip, ZK1AAU, and
an Icom 706. Antennas are a Cushcraft R-7000 atop the condo
complex at the 100 ft. level and an all band 160 to 10 meter
inverted V trap dipole. A daily schedule is kept with the hams
back home in Michigan at 2030z on 14195 and anyone wishing a PJ8/
contact from St. Maartin may jump in at that time. They will move
to another frequency to accomodate all license classes. They
generally are on the air 1230z to 1600z each day. Afternoons are
spend doing the non ham related activities.
RSGB IOTA (New Checkpoint). The
RSGB IOTA Committee is happy to announce the following new
Country Assistant and Checkpoint appointments for Brazil and
South America:

Ronaldo Bastos Reis, PS7AB, as Country Assistant for
Brazil, Pedro Sirzanink, PP5SZ, as Country Assistant for
South America (excluding French Guiana). PS7AB and PP5SZ
will act as Assistant Checkpoints when necessary. These
new checkpoint arrangements, which have the support of
the Brazilian National Society LABRE, took effect on 1
January 1997.
RUSSIAN CAPITAL. Serge, RU6BV,
will be active from here starting January 19th for about 3 weeks.
From the Russian capital of Moscow, he will be signing with the
callsign RU6BV/3. His activity will be on CW and SSB all bands,
exclude WARC and 160m. He states this will be an educational trip
for him. After his trip (February), he will be sending out
special QSL cards for these contacts. QSL cards are already

S2, KUTUBDIA ISLAND (Bangladesh).
The DXNS states Vittorio/I1SLY, Fernanda/IK1FLF, and Manju/S21AM,
are planning to be active from this possible new IOTA February
21-23rd.
VK0, MACQUARIE ISLAND. As of the
beginning of December, there are three radio amateurs who are
working at the meteorological station on the island. Operators
are Tom, VK0TS, who is a Communications Technical Officer; Eric,
VK0KBB, in the engineering section; and Graham, VK0WG, who is
attached to the meteorology unit. All have been too busy working
during the crew change-over which leaves no time for amateur
radio. VK0TS has plans to be active on CW/SSB mainly 80 and 40
meters.
VK0IR HEARD ISLAND DXPEDITION.
VK0IR started its radio operations at 0654z on Tuesday, January
14th. Reports indicated that they landed on the island at 2230z
January 11th (0330z local time) in 30 knot winds. All operators
and equipment were put ashore by helicopter, taking 51 trips over
five hours. Presently, activity continues on all bands. Updated
information and "LOG INFORMATION" can be found on their
WEB-site.
ZF, CAYMAN ISLAND. Bruce, W6OSP,
and Joe, WA6VNR, report that they will be operating here as ZF2QM
in the CQWW 160M Contest . QSL Via W6OSP.
ZY & ZZ, FURADO ISLAND AND FRANCES
ISLAND (BRAZIL). Look for ZY3CEJ February 8-11th, on
SB/CW, all bands, usual DX frequencies and the Brazil DX Net.
This island does not have an IOTA but is good for DIB-62. QSL via
PY3CEJ; or F6FNU. Frances Island is a Brazilian island located in
the Espirito Santo State Group (IOTA SA-067, also DIB-068,
DFB-ES-07), and will be active February 8-12th. The callsigns to
be used: SSB - ZZ0Z (Lima/PY1NEZ), ZW0Z (Lineu/PY1ADV) and for CW
- ZX0Z (Zeca/PY1LVF). Activity will be all bands. Suggested
frequencies: SSB - 50100, 28400, 24905, 21200, 18075, 14200,
7060, 3790 kHz and CW - 50100, 28015, 24915, 21015, 18075, 14015,
10150, 7015, 3515, 1815 kHz. QSL via home call or via bureau.
SPECIAL REQUEST (STOP THE
MAIL!.) Paul Kidd, A35RK, has requested OPDX to tell its users to
pass along the following information. PLEASE DO NOT SEND E-MAIL
to Paul. He will not reply to any E-mail requests. Paul states
that there is no "real" Internet in Tonga: it's an
E-mail-only store and forward system, with a periodic
(EXPENSIVE!) satellite link to New Zealand. The cost is HUGE! He
mainly uses it for family and business matters. He will not
respond to any messages dealing with amateur radio operations.
