CANADIAN BC IOTA ISLANDS. In
July you will see the first operation from Dundas Island (NA-118)
since 1989. Also in July, a group from the U.S. and Canada will
particpate in a Multi-Op effort from Queen Charlotte Island
(NA-051) during the upcoming IOTA Contest. But before all this
starts, Lew, N6VV, will be active as N6VV/VE7 from Quadra Island
(NA-091), July 18-21st. Then from July 25-28th, Lew/N6VV/VE7 with
K6XV, W7DR and a group of local VE7's will operate a Multi-Op
station for the IOTA Contest from Queen Charlotte Island
(NA-051). After their contest effort, N6VV/VE7 and W7DR will be
active from the Dundas Island Group (Green Island) (NA-118) July
31st to August 2nd. All activity will be on 80-10 meters plus the
normal IOTA frequencies with operations on CW and SSB. QSL via

D2, ANGOLA. Just before going to
print, the OPDX received a message from Fernando, EA4BB and ex
9Q5BB. Fernando states he has received the license, D2BB. He will
be working in D2-land and plans to stay for a year and a half. He
will be operating all bands in his spare time. For the moment his
rig is a CODAN transceiver with 100 W output, and the antenna is
just a folded multiband dipole. He plans to upgrade this antenna
soon, but is limited to SSB until he can get ahold of a key. QSL
is via EA4BB, either bureau or direct.
DAYTON HAMVENTION DX HIGHLIGHTS (by
Editor). Still recovering from the long three day event,
I figured I should report (share) SOME of the activities that
took place. The Southwest Ohio DX Association Dinner Banquet,
which took place Friday night (May 16th), was highlighted with an
interesting talk/slide show by Bob, KK6EK, on the Heard
DXpedition. The majority of the VK0IR team was also present. The
Southwest Ohio DX Association awarded the VK0IR team a plaque for
DXpedition of the Year. The SWODXA also awarded Ron, Wright,
ZL1AMO, a plaque for DXpeditioner of the Year. The Hospitality
suites (Friday and Saturday night) at the Crown Plaza where great
as usual. I was especially pleased to see such a good response to
the Northern Ohio DX Association's hospitality suite. The DX
Forum on Saturday was also great. There was more on Heard Island
and the VK0IR team (Just can't get enough - BUY the book and
video!). There were also speakers for the TN2U/TN4M, XZ1N and
ZL8RI DXpeditions. There was one thing missing this year. Many
have commented and noticed that there was no report from the
League and the DXCC Desk which usually opens the DX Forum every
year. Lastly, I enjoyed myself as always. It is wonderful seeing
all the friends I have made over the last few years (especially
since I started writing the OPDX). Friendship is a major part of
this hobby and I will be looking forward to returning to Dayton
next year to see all my friends again. It is a shame that it only

FRENCH IOTAs. David, ON4BDS,
will sign F/ON4BDS/P from several French West Coast islands from
July 12-28th. Look for David to activate the following IOTA's:
EU-157/Cezembre July 13-16; EU-074/Brehat July 16-19;
EU-065/Ouessant July 19-22; EU-068/Sein July 22-25; and
EU-094/Glenan July 25-28 (This schedule is subject to change). He
also plans to be active in the IOTA contest from the Glenan
Islands. Operations will be on all HF bands in both SSB and CW
(not more than 10 wpm PLEASE!) QSL cards are "OK" via
the 1996 Callbook adress, or via the bureau to ON4BDS, his home
call.
I.I.A. (Italian Islands Award). This
Award/Trophy is issued by the Crazy DX Group. Every OM and SWL
(world-wide) can participate. The purpose is to
contact/listen/activate the largest number of different Italian
islands. Only referenced islands from the official IIA list will
be valid, but any possible island reference released after the
Trophy's starting time will also be valid. The participation is
free of cost. Participation period is from June 1st to September

KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. If you're
lucky, you may catch a contact with Aki, JA5DQH, as KH0AA from
Saipan before he leaves. He will be there until May 27th. He was
active in the CQWW WPX CW contest. Aki will be running 500 watts
and use only dipole and vertical antennas on the roof top of his
hotel. He plans to be active on the WARC bands and 160 meters.
His Sunrise/Sunset is 1944z/0840z. QSL via JA5DQH.
MALYJ VYSOTSKIJ ISLAND (ex-4J1). Jari,
OH2BU/OH7RF, reports the following: After a nearly two year
hiatus, Malyj Vysotskij (ex 4J1-) will be reactivated this coming
June. This 7th M-V Island DXpedition will start operations late
afternoon (local) on Thursday, June 5th, and run through Monday
morning, June 16th. Two callsigns are in use, OH5AB/MVI and
R1MVI. Both calls reflect the uniqueness of this DXCC country
located within the territory of Russia but under the control of
Finland. Malyj Vysotskij, or Ravansaari, (EU-117) is located in
the Bay of Vyborg northwest of St. Petersburg. The all-band,
all-mode operation, involving twelve operators from Finland and
Russia, will be running at least three complete stations 24 hours
a day. Look for this operation on the following frequencies:
There will also be some local 144 and 432 MHz operation,
but there will be no satellite operation. Operators are
Orvo/OH5NE, Ari/OH5KUY, Eero/OH5PT, Veikko/OH5YB,
Pentti/OH5WR, Alex/RV1AC, Alex/RU1AS, Alex/RZ1AZ, Vasiliy/
RV1AN, Igor/RN1AB, Vlad/RA1ACQ and Vlad/RW1CW. All operators
are from Lappeenranta and St.Petersburg Radio Clubs. QSL

N6, SANTA CATALINA ISLAND (USA).
Europeans begin looking for Lew, N6VV, from May 30th to June 2nd,
signing portable (N6VV/p) from IOTA NA-066 during the West Coast
morning and evening openings. Suggested frequencies: 14260 SSB,
14040 CW, 7260 SSB and 7040 CW. QSL via N6VV CBA. Additional

NEW IBP HF BEACONS. Martin,
G3USF, IARU Region 1 HF Beacon Coordinator, reports another of
the five-band HF beacon network stations is now operational. The
VK6RBP beacon, sited 28km south-east of Perth, is like all the
other IBP beacons where the power steps down from 100 watts to
0.1 watt in four stages, transmitting 10 seconds on the IBP
frequencies on the 14, 18, 21, 24 and 28 MHz. Also, the JA2IGY
beacon which operated on the 14100 kHz frequency only, is now
understood to be operational on all five bands. According to
Martin, this leaves four beacons not as yet operational (BY, UA,
OA and ZL). There are 14 beacons now on the air, and all these
beacons are sponsored by NCDXF.
OJ0, MARKET REEF. The planned
operation by OH2KI and OH1VR during the CQWW WPX Contest for this
past weekend had to be cancelled due to transportation/weather
problems.
PARTNERSHIP FOR PEACE (PFP) AWARD.
Sten, SM6DER, reports during the "Partnership for
Peace" exercise in Sweden, the Hisingens Radioclub (SK6AW)
together with Naval Command West (SL6BE and SL6BF), will issue an
award for working amateur stations between now and May 31st.

Ivano, I4IFL, reports there is a new address for the QSL

contest. (Note: WPX SSB is via JE6DND).
YT4I and 4O4C active during CQ WPX CW Contest have the
QSL Manager of YU4WU, Robert Babec, P.O.Box 224, R.S. via
Yugoslavia.
SPECIAL EVENT (1 DAY!). In
celebration of one of the greatest bridge/ tunnel constructions
in the world which will be opened for railway traffic June 1st,
the following Danish stations will be active on the Store Baelt
(Great Belt): OZ2DSB, OZ3DSB, OZ5DSB, OZ6DSB, OZ8DSB and
OZ4DSB/GB. The last station will be situated on the bridge. The
stations will be active June 1st, from 0800 to 1600z. The
frequencies will be 3700, 7060, 14335 kHz and 145.450 Mhz. There
will be 3 QSL-cards issued. One of them will be in watercolor
showing a freight train leaving the tunnel. QSLs will be sent to
all, but if you want a direct QSL or need further information

VK9W, WILLIS ISLAND. The Oceania
DX Group (ODXG) is planning a DXpedition here with the following
operators: Harry/VK4DHM, Bob/VK4MR, Jon/VK4CY, Ann/WA1S,
Jon/K7CO/VK2DXT, Gaby/XE2Z/XE2GV, Elvira/IV3FSG, Eric/FK8GM,
Bill/VK4FW and one JA YL yet to be announced. The ten operators
plan to leave Cairns, Australia, on September 9th, on the 60 foot
vessel called "FLOREAT". This journey will take approx.
30 hours and the DXpedition will have over 3 tons of equipment
which include 800 litres of petrol. Their 12 day stay on the
island will consist of 2 separate campsites set up to operate up
to 6 complete HF stations and 1 on 6 meters. They plan to operate
160-10 meters, SSB, CW and RTTY. The budget for this Dxpeditions
is $32,400 (USD). Donations are most welcome no matter how big or
small. They report that they are fortunate that the vessel has
been secured at a reasonable rate, or it would have been $40,000

ZP, PARAGUAY. Ernesto, LU6BEG,
who was active last weekend as ZP0M during the CQWW WPX CW
Contest, will continue to be active after the contest as
ZP5/LU6BEG. The length of his activity is unknown. QSL ZP0M via
ZP5XF and ZP5/LU6BEG via home call.
