North America. The 8Q7AA operation will be active during the CQWW
160 meter CW DX Contest. This contest begins at 2200 GMT on

ATTENTION RTTY CONTESTERS! William
"Mr. Bill" Eddy, NY2U, President of TARA and Contest
Manager, has informed OPDX that QST has published the wrong dates
for the "TARA RTTY Sprint". Mr. Bill states the Troy
Amateur Radio Association (TARA) has, for the last six years,
sponsored the "Annual TARA RTTY SPRINT" which is
normally held on the second weekend of December. However, this
year the contest was moved to the first weekend of December (6th
and 7th) to avoid any conflict with the ARRL's 10 Meter Contest.
The trouble they have now is that the ARRL has put their OLD
contest weekend date (December 13rd and 14th) in their November
issue of QST, on page 94! Mr. Bill states, "I would feel
really terrible if somebody missed our contest due to this
error." He has also supplied OPDX with the complete set of
"Official Rules and Regulations" for the contest. OPDX
InterNet Subscribers will receive this as an additional bulletin.
ATTENTION 160M CONTESTERS! It
has been reported that the December issue of the CQ Contest
Column has the wrong mode listed for the January contest dates.
January is CW not SSB. The SSB dates are February 27th to March
1st (2200Z to 1600Z). The conetst was moved back one week to
avoid the ARRL CW DX Contest.
A4, OMAN. After their stay and
activity from Ali's (A61AJ) QTH, look for David/K3LP and
Rich/KE3Q to be active as A43/K3LP and A43/KE3Q. They will stay
in Muscat from December 2-5th. QSL via W3UR (ex WR3E).
GD, ISLE OF MAN. Look for Steve
this week (if you do not work him during the contest this past
weekend) as GD4UOL. His activity will last until December 6th
with operations on CW. QSL via GD Bureau.
IOTA NUMBERS PLEASE! Some
indivduals were asking what the IOTA numbers were for Deception
Island (LU1ZC) and Staten Island (L20XSI) mentioned in last
week's bulletin (OPDX.332). Staten Island is IOTA SA-049 and
Deception Island is IOTA AN-010.
J8, ST. VINCENT. "The Daily
DX" reports that Volkmar, DF2SS, will operate from this
Caribean Island from December 20th to January 9th. He will be
signing J8/DF2SS. He plans to be active on RTTY and CW. QSL via
DL2MDZ.
KH2, GUAM. Dave, N2NL, reports
he is being transferred (he is with the U.S. Coast Guard) to Guam
in January. He will be there for at least 2 years. Dave has
indicated he will be active as N2NL/KH2 sometime in the spring
(once all his equipment has arrived on the island). He will
operate mostly CW and will be active on most bands and in
contests. His operating time will be somewhat limited due to the
nature of his job (he is stationed on a patrol boat but plans to
be quite active when he can). He also mentions his tentative
plans to put KH2 and KH0 on 160 meters during the winter season
of 1998 and 1999 (especially to help Europe and the US with these
two countries on topband). His tentative QSL information is via
either W2YC or CBA.
MU, GUERNSEY. If you were lucky
to work Jay, K4LZE, as MW0BKA from Wales, you may be just as
lucky to catch him as MU0BKA from Guernsey between December
4-9th. His activity will be mainly CW 160-10 meters, 7 kHz up
from bottom of the band edge. There will be some SSB. QSL via
home call.
NEW PROPAGATION SERVICE AVAILABLE FOR
AMATEURS! Announced this week was the availability of a
new radio propagation service known as "CAROS", or the
Coordinated Amateur Radio Observation System. This service can be
found on the World-Wide-Web at: http://solar.uleth.ca/solar/www/caros.html
CAROS is based on the principle of amateurs contributing radio
propagation information for others to use. They have been
planning to implement such a service primarily to test whether
amateurs can supply sufficient information to make such a global
service useful. Its success or failure will be directly dependent
upon those who use it and find it useful. The complete
announcement and details will be available to all OPDX InterNet
Subscribers as an additional bulletin.
