News, K8XP, W8EB, G3HSR, G4BUE & DX News Sheet, HB9FAP,
JA0DWY, LA6WEA, OE2GEN, PA3ERC, VK3CWX, VK6APK, XE1KK and ZP5AZL
for the following DX information.
3C, EQUATORIAL GUINEA. Alan,
3C5I, made his first contacts on six meters (possibly the first
ever from 3C?) last weekend with Italy (apparently on double hop
E's). He runs a beacon intermittantly on 50.107 MHz with 10 watts
to a 4 element quad. Note, however, local TV makes reception
difficult for him in the evenings (approximately 1500-2300z).
Also, Alan is on the HF bands, but his main interest is six
meters. He expects to be in Malabo for two years. QSL to Alan
Isaachsen, c/o Mobil Equatorial Guinea, P. O. Box 13908, Dallas,
TX 75313.
5R, MALAGASY REPUBLIC. The
"DX News Sheet" reports Ray, is still quite active as
5R8FK, often on 30 meters CW around 0000z. QSL via NY3N.
9M6, EAST MALAYSIA. The 59(9)
DXReport states Pekka, OH2YY, will be signing 9M6PO from Kenigou
for the CQ WPX SSB Contest (March 27-28th). His top priority is
the lower frequencies.
9N1, NEPAL. Just a reminder that
Charlie, K4VUD, has returned to Nepal and will be active as
9N1UD. He will be active in the upcoming contests until his
return to USA on March 9th. Please refer to OPDX.339. QSL via
K4VUD.
C6, BAHAMAS. Steve, N4JQQ, will
be active from Treasure Cay, Abaco, July 10th to August 2nd, as
C6AFP. He was there this past week, but his main activity was to
work on his house there. He states that he took a PK-232 for RTTY
to be used in the future by him or by anyone wanting to rent his
house (you must bring your own laptop). QSL C6AFP via N4JQQ,
Steve Rutledge, 199 S. Grove Park Road, Memphis, TN 38117.
HK0, PROVIDENCIA (Update, please
refer to OPDX.344). Silvano, KB5GL, reported to OPDX that he will
now be operating as HK0/KB5GL instead of KB5BL/HK0 (as reported
earlier). Also, Vance, N5VL, from the Island/DX News, told OPDX
that he talked to Silvano by telephone and informed him that he
has extended his IOTA operation from NA-049. His new dates are
February 26 to March 6th.
JX, JAN MAYEN. Ken, LA6WEA,
reports to OPDX that Per, JX7DFA, will be active every Saturday
on 18090 kHz from 1400-1500z, looking for U.S. stations. He
states QSL via: JX7DFA, N-8099 Jan Mayen, Norway or via home call
LA7DFA.
KH9, WAKE ISLAND. The Dateline
DX Association returns to Wake Island this week and will be
active from February 26th through March 11th. Their emphasis will
again be on Europe and the low bands. Operators will be Tom/K8XP
(ZK1XXP, AL7EL/KH9, V7/AL7EL), Bob/N2OO (9M6OO, V85OO, V85OM,
XX9OO), Michael/N6MZ (VK0IR, ZK1XXP, SV5/N6MZ), and Bill/N2WB
(KG4WB). Four stations are planned to be active 24 hours with
directional antennas for 10 through 20 and verticals for 40, 80
and 160. Special efforts on RTTY will be handled by N2WB.
Operators will sign K8XP/KH9, N6MZ/KH9, N2OO/KH9 and N2WB/KH9.
QSL via WA4YBV. For more details, please refer to OPDX.342. Also,
checkout the Dateline DX Association Web Site whcih can be found
at: www.goldtel.net/ddxa
Updated information can be found there for the upcoming Wake
Island operation, as well as other operations in the past. The
site is still under construction and is not yet quite complete.
OE9, AUSTRIA. Gerald, OE2GEN,
reports that some members of the Austrian OE2DX-GROUP (OE2S) will
be active in the 1998 ARRL Internation Phone Contest (March
7-8th) as OE9S. QSL via OE2GEN, please via bureau.
PJ8, ST. MAARTEN. By the time
you read this, Ron, ND5S, and Bill, W8EB, (along with their wives
KF5LG and W8DVC) will be active from here until March 8th. They
will be using the contest callsign PJ8A for both CW/SSB ARRL
Contests and the CQWW 160 Meters Phone Contest. They plan to keep
a sked each day on 14200 kHz + or - 2030z with the gang back
home. If you need a contact, you can make it then. They will also
be active on RTTY and the satellites.
QSL INFO AND NEWS.....
If you had a chance to work Fabio, HB9FAP, during the
ARRL CW Contest as a Single/Op Single Band (7MHz) this
past weekend using the special callsign HB5H, please QSL
via home callsign.
ZK1XXP QSLS. For those of you who are waiting for your
QSLs from the Dateline DX Association's operation from
North Cook in September, those cards have still not been
received from the printer in Germany. They were told they
should arrive in the next 3 to 4 weeks. The DDXA
appreciates your patience and certainly wants to confirm
those QSOs for you. Again, please be patient. It is also
not necessary to send second requests.
N4BQW QSLS. Mac, WA4FFW, reports that all QSLs received
to date for all of the N4BQW operations have been
answered. This includes all bureau cards and all cards
that have been received. Mac reports with deep regrets,
there unfortunately was a pirate that operated a lot on
21 MHz CW and also 7 MHz CW. Chuck did not work any 21
Mhz CW on his KH5 trip. He worked only a few 40 meters CW
contacts, but it appears that the pirate was quite active
and must have had a good signal. All cards received for
what appears to have been a pirate were returned with a
note of explanation in them.
Rob, PA3ERC, reports that all direct QSLs for the
Caribbean Tour '97 are mailed. These are for: J6/PA3BBP,
J6/PA3ERC, J6/PA3EWP 9Y4/PA3BBP, 9Y4/PA3ERC and
9Y4/PA3EWP. He states bureau cards will be sent out next
week.
SSIDXG AND MKDXF PACIFIC ISLANDS
DXPEDITION (Update). The Dxpedition has already begun
with SSIDXG member Mark, KA4IST, operating from Palmyra as
KA4IST/KH5 on February 5th. Mark will operate as much as possible
on CW, SSB and RTTY, but will also be serving as member of the
crew of the transportation ship. On February 20th, SSIDXG member
Chuck, N4BQW, another operator, joined Mark on the island. During
the upcoming week, look for more operators to arrive. Slated to
arrive on February 25th, are Joe/N4DAZ, Harold/K4AU, and MKDXF
members Pat/NH6UY, and Mac/WA4FFW. The around the clock
operations from Palmyra will continue with several stations on
the air until February 26th. At that point and time, the group
will depart for either Baker-Howland or Kingman Reef. They have
permission to operate from Kingman, but the group is at the mercy
of the USFWS and negotiations are continuing for this leg. There
is a possibility for Chuck and Mark to put Kingman Reef on the
air before the others arrive on the 25th. The Team's plan is to
sail for Howland Island starting operations on or about March 5th
and be on the air for six days. The trip will be in conjunction
with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Again, the team
of operators will be at the mercy of the USFWS's work schedule,
and they have stated that they have 6 days work there. The six
operators have announced that they would like to dedicate and
conduct this dxpedition in the "Spirit and the Memory"
of the late Eric Edberg, W6DU. Eric was Board member of the
NCDXF. Eric loved DX and loved to see anyone work a new one no
matter where in the world they lived. Eric became a "Silent
Key (SK)" on January 19th only hours after voting from his
hospital bed to help support this operation. It is in that spirit
and in his memory that the team has dedicated this dxpedition. In
the Spirit of Eric, W6DU, the team will do everything possible to
work as many contacts as possible throughout every part of the
world. They will work all bands CW, SSB, RTTY, and they will try
six meters. The only factors that will influence their operation
are propagation and weather Look for the following callsigns to
be used:
Palmyra KA4IST/KH5 QSL via AC7DX
Baker-Howland (SSB) K4AU/WH1 QSL via K4AU
Baker-Howland (CW) WA4FFW/NH1 QSL via WA4FFW

SPECIAL EVENT. The Northern
Corridor Radio Group will be activating the special callsign
VI6EWT to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the opening of the
East-West Telegraph. This line carried all communications between
Adelaide and Perth, a distance of some 2700Km. Operations will be
from the tiny township of Eucla which is located at the border of
Western Australia and South Australia. Eucla is the site of one
of the Telegraph Repeater stations placed along the route of the
East-West line. A team of 15 operators will commence operations
at 0100z on Saturday, March 21st and end the 24 hours operation
later on Sunday, March 22nd. This period of operation coincides
with the Australian Field Day Contest. Activity will be on 80-10
meters. Following this initial Field Day operation, the callsign
will be used on all bands and all modes by various operators in
VK6-land. This period of operation will probably be for about 2
weeks. This may be extended if interest is high and propagation
is good. The Northern Corridor Radio Group will also be using the
VI6EWT call for the CQWW WPX SSB Contest, March 28-29th, from its
VK6ANC club shack. The QSL cards for direct request may include a
photo of the ruins of the Eucla Telegraph Station. Bureau cards
may not be as elaborate; it all depends on numbers and costs. QSL
VI6EWT via the bureau or direct to: Northern Corridor Radio Group
Inc. VK6ANC, PO Box 244, North Beach, WA 6920, Australia
XE, MEXICO. Look for the XE1RCS
contest team to be active in the CQ 160 Meter Contest (February
27th to March 1st). During the contest, and for the third year in
