1X, CHECHNYA REPUBLIC. Khamzat,
1X5AA, located near the city of Grozny, continues to be very
active on 20 meters CW. Activity seems to take place between 2300
and 0130z around 14015 kHz. Many ask if this is a new entity. The
answer now is NO. For DXCC purposes, if license and documentation
is acceptable, 1X5AA counts for European Russia. QSL via W3HNK.
3B7, ST. BRANDON (UPDATE). A
press release by Urs, HB9ABO, reports that HB9JAI just received
the license for their 3B7 DXpedition from the Mauritian
Telecommunication authorities. The callsign that was issued is
3B7RF. The updated list of operators will be: 3B8CF, HB9ABO,
HB9ADP, HB9AFH, HB9AFI, HB9AHL, HB9AJW, HB9BQI, HB9BQW, HB9BXE,
HB9JAI, JA3IG, K5KG and W7SE. Four stations will be active from
two sites on Raphael Island, one of the 22 islands making up the
archipelago. The operation is scheduled to start May 7th and last
until May 17th. The operation has received an ARRL Colvin Award
grant of $5000 (USD) to help in funding. During the first three
days, operations will be on mainly 40, 20 and 15 meters, but the
announced suggested frequency are:

5X, UGANDA. Peter, ON6TT,
signing 5X1T, has been quite active on the WARC bands. Look for
him on 17 or 12 meters beginning around 1800z. QSL via ON5NT.
6th ANNUAL DAYTON HAMVENTION CONTEST
DINNER will be held on May 16th at 6:30 PM. There will
be inductees into the CQ Contest Hall of Fame "Class of
1998", door prizes and more. Roger, G3SXW, will be the guest
dinner speaker. There is LIMITED seating of 300. Ticket sales are
ahead of last year. Place your ticket order now at Radio

eastern USA time). Ticket order deadline is approaching fast.

6Y5, JAMAICA. Mitsumasa, N2HNQ,
has been active on 15 and 12 meters. Activity on CW, SSB and RTTY
have been reported. Look for him signing N2HNQ/6Y5. QSL via
JH4IFF. Also, look for Katsuyuki, N8QDB, signing N8QDB/6Y5.
Activity has been mainly on CW, with some SSB, on 12, 15, 20 and
40 meters. QSL via JR4ISF. The length of both operations is
unknown.
BI, XI-SHA ISLAND (CHINA).
Operators BD7IA, BD7IX, BD7JA, BD7KW, BG7NQ, and BD7YA are
planning to operate from here. The team of operators call
themselves the "BI7Y Ham Group" and will use the
callsign BI7Y from Xi-Sha. Activity should have begun, but no
QSNs have been reported. Their operation is to last until May
10th. Their departure may have been delayed because the team has
mentioned that a ship only travels there once a month, and they
were not sure on the exact day. The group plans to be active on
40, 20, 15, 10 meters with operations on SSB, CW and RTTY. QSL
via BD7JA (QSL direct only) to: Yang, P.O. Box 1713 Guangzhou
(510600) P.R. China.
BI3H, SHIJIUTUO ISLANDS
(Upcoming operation and QSL Update). The group of Chinese who
activated this new IOTA (AS-134) during the April 24-26th BI3H
operation will be going back again. The group made 2698 QSOs (922
on CW and 1776 on SSB) in 23 hours. They will return to the
island again in July during the IOTA Contest. QSL cards for the
BI3H DXpedition will be printed after the July operation. QSL
Manager Mac, W3HC, has received over 200 letters already for
cards and some wanted their cards ASAP so they could send them in
to ARRL for credit for China. The sponsors for the QSLs are:
N1XME/Joe, AA8GQ/Helmut, K5AB/Alan, and AD4LX/Ray.
EP, IRAN. Ali, EP2MKO, has been
active recently on the bottom portion on 20 meters (14011 kHz)
bewteen 2000 and 2100z. Also, check 15 meters (21004 kHz) after
2130z. QSL via UA6HCW.
FO0/H40 SUMMARY LETTER FROM
JA1BK (provided by Kaz, JH1ORA). OPDX InteNet Subscribers will

FR5/T, TROMELIN ISLAND. Henri,
FR5ZQ/T, continues to be active and has been appearing on 14272
kHz at or around 1400z, sometimes with Hito, JA8FCG. It has been
mentioned by Hito that Henri doesn't like pile-ups, so he makes a
list for Henri.
HP3, PANAMA. Gary, K4GZ, and
Bill, W4WX, will be active from Volcan, Panama, May 12-18th. Both
will be signing /HP3 on SSB, CW and RTTY. QSL to home callsigns
with SASE or via bureau.
IOTA NEWS.....
Tony/WF1N and Lou/W1DIG (ex KA1DIG) will be on Pot Island
(NA-136, Thimble Island Group) May 15-17th. Operation
will start around 1600z Friday and end about 1800z
Sunday. They plan to operate with a tribander and 40
meters dipole, and amp (provided Murphy leaves the
generator alone). Look for them on/near the usual IOTA
SSB frequencies. QSL to home callsign direct or via the
bureau. Pot Island also has a USI number of CT-017S.

RX1, FRANZ JOSEF LAND. RX1OX/FJL
was heard this past week on 30 and 20 meters CW. Check between
2100 and 2200z.
SPECIAL CALLSIGN ON THE AIR FROM AFRICA
TELECOM 98. A special callsign, ZS98IARU, will be on the
air from Monday, May 4th, to Saturday, May 9th, from the IARU
Region One stand at Africa Telecom 98. The conference and
exhibition are being held at the Expo Centre in Johannesburg,
South Africa. Amateur Radio is well represented at this important
ITU event. The station will be on the air during the exhibition
opening times: 0800- 1600z. Arrangements are being made to
operate the station outside exhibition hours. A special QSL card
will be issued. The QSL address is: P.O. BOX 1842, Hillcrest
3650.
SPECIAL EVENT STATION. Look for
special event station GI6YM to be active until the end of the
year end. The station is on the air in celebration of the 75th
Anniversary of the YMCA Radio Club. Activity will be on 80-10
meters CW and SSB. QSL via K1WY.
SPECIAL EVENT STATION. The
Guayaquil Radio Club (GRC) is celebrating 75 years of their
foundation with a special commemorative QSL. The GRC invites all
ham operators of the world to make a contact with the official
GRC station, HC2GRC, on May 9th, from the 0000-2400 (Ecuador
time, -5 GMT) on the HF bands.
SPECIAL EVENT STATION. The
WAMRAC and the World Amateur Radio Christian Association (WACRAL)
from Hudderfields will be celebrating its 40th anniversary and
will be on the air as GB4OWR during May 5-6th and May 8-10th on
the following suggested frequencies and time periods. On Friday,
May 8th, and Saturday, May 9th: 14333 (0600-0700z), 3747
(0700-0745z), 7045-7050 (0815-0930z), 14333 (0930-1100z), 21350
(1230-1330z), 28333 (1600-1800z) and 21350 (1800-1900z). On
Sunday, May 10th: The usual Sunday a.m. U.K. WACRAL Net on 3747
kHz at 0700-0800z. The station will be in use on Tuesday the 5th
and Wednesday the 6th on 3747 kHz between 0900-1100z and
1230-1430z, although other bands may be used briefly. For earlier
times or later times on these two days, the frequencies assigned
for Friday and Saturday can be used. NOTE: All planned
frequencies are +/- QRM.
SPECIAL EVENT UPDATE. Last week
in OPDX.354 we mentioned details on the special events stations
that would be active during 1998 World Football Cup. This event
is organized by FRANCE and the REF-UNION (French Amateur Radio
Society) and they have decided to propose during this world
competition a Diploma (1998 WORLD FOOTBALL CUP AWARD) for all
Hams and SWLs in the world. Between June 10th and July 12th, 10
specials callsigns will be activated from each city where
competition will take place (Please refer to OPDX.354 for
callsigns and locations). They have now announced that French
hams will use a special prefix FBC (for FootBall Cup, ex.
FBC6REF). ONLY contacts/heard made between June 10th and July 12,
1998, are valid for the awards. Awards that are available:
First CLASS - 5 different TM stations plus 20 different
FBC
Second CLASS or EXCELLENCE - The 10 different TM stations
plus 50 different FBC.
Only a certified list of contacts/heard is necessary with
application, NO QSLs

NOT ACCEPTED)

S2,BANGLADESH. The "DX News
Sheet" reports that S21K is newly licensed and is a resident
on Bhola Island. This also may be a new IOTA, but no other
details have been provided and no QSNs have been reported.
TJ, CAMEROON. The "DX News
Letter" reports John, WB4MBU/TT8JFC, currently in Chad, will
be going here for 2 months. Activity will possibly take place
during May and June. No other details and dates were mentioned,
but he has applied for a license.
TT8, CHAD. Erci, TT8JE, has been
very active on 20 meters CW/SSB. Activity seems to be
around/between 2100z and 0100z. Check 14025 and 14195 kHz. QSL
via F6FNU.
VP2V, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.
Look for operators Tom/K6CT, Terry/N6CW and Frederick/K9VV to be
active as VP2VDX in the CQWW WPX CW Contest as a Multi/Single
entry. The group will be here May 27th through June 2nd. Activity
outside the contest will be on the WARC bands and 6 meters. QSL
via K6CT.
VP8/G, SOUTH GEORGIA. "The
Daily DX" reports that Carl, G4VFU, who will be leaving the
Falkland Islands by the time you read this, plans to be active
from here sometime between December, 1998, and February, 1999.
