DX News Letter, FK8HC, G4BUE & DX News Sheet, HA1AG,
HS0/G3NOM, LU1DZ, PY1KS, RA6CO, SM7PKK, VK2SG RTTY DX Notes,
ZP5AZL and ZS5BBO for the following DX information.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to the upcoming CQWW CW DX
Contest and some additional announcements of stations
participating in the contest, I felt that an earlier release of
the OPDX bulletin was warranted.
5X, UGANDA (A dedicated operator!).
. Mats, SM7PKK, will be active as 5X1Z in the CQWW CW Contest. He
is currently on a mission to Tanzania and will arrive back in
Uganda (hopefully) 1 hour before the contest. This definitely
means he will not be set up for a multi-band effort, so he will
stay on a single band, either 10 or 15 meters.
7Z1AB ACTIVITY. Karl, K4YT/4X,
reports he was in Riyadh during September and was able to operate
sometimes after work. He states that the station has not been
shut down as reported earlier, just no operators. He talked to
Johnny O'Dell, KA5BQM, who is one of the communicators at the
Embassy, and was told that he has lost interest in Ham Radio.
Johnny did say that if any TDY'er comes to the embassy they can
use the station. The station is located in the basement of the
embassy. There are 3 radios with amps and a 6 element tribander.
Unfortunately, non-embassy employees are not permitted on the
compound unescorted and therefore cannot operate a contest
without, for example, Johnny being there. Karl states that he
will be going back to Riyadh early next year and will try to do
more operating. There are about 10 people in the Embassy's radio
club, but all work for private companies and therefore cannot
have unlimited access to the station. In case anyone wants to
contact Johnny, he can be reached at Unit 61307, APO AE
09803-1307.
9M6, EAST MALAYSIA. "The
59(9) DXReport" states that Phil, G4JMB/VR2CT, will be
active as 9M6CT from Kota Kinabalu, December 7th through January
16th and again in March/April. QSL via G4JMB.
9M8, PULAU SATANG (EAST MALAYSIA).
Hans, DF5UG, reports that his OC-165 operation is cancelled due
to bad weather. He hopes to return in March/April 1999.
A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.
Bernie, editor of "The Daily DX", is in Dubai. He has
been busy visting with Ali, A61AJ, and his family. Bernie has
been able to get on 160, 80, 40, 30, 20 and 10 meters at several
times during his stay. He states to look for A61AJ to be
extremely active this weekend on 10, 15, 20, 40, 80 and 160
meters in the CQWW CW DX Contest as a Multi-Multi effort. QSL via
W3UR. He mentions that he still does not know his exact return
date.
C4, CYPRUS. The "DX News
Sheet" reports that Ivo, 9A3A, will be active in the CQWW CW
Contest as a Single Op/All Band entry as C4C.
FK, NEW CALEDONIA. Look for
Franck, FK8HC, to operate in the CQWW CW Contest. The operation
is planned to begin November 25th or 26th. He plans to enter the
contest as a Single Op/Single Band on 10 meters.
FT5Z, AMSTERDAM ISLAND. FT5ZH is
now active on the air with two stations. Their planned activity
will last until December 23rd. They will operate on CW/SSB/RTTY.
They have been heard on 14215 and 21295 kHz the past few days.
The "VK2SG RTTY DX Notes" states to "Expect RTTY
from them during the 3rd and 4th week of operation." QSL via
F6KDF, either direct or via bureau. OPDX InterNet Subscribers
will receive an addtional bulletin containing the latest press
release by Jeffrey Pawlan, WA6KBL.
HS, THAILAND. Just a quick
reminder for the upcoming CQWW CW Contest that the stations in
Thailand have special permission to operate on 80 and 160 meters
this weekend. Normally stations in Thailand are not permitted to
use those bands. They will be limited to 3534-3536 KHz on 80
meters and 1840-1850 KHz on 160 meters. There will be plenty of
stations active especially some newcomers. Look for E22AAA to be
activated by a bunch of newcomers with the help of HS1CHB. This
group (other than HS1CHB) have just upgraded to HF status, so be
patient with this one. QSL to HS1CHB. In addition a number of
hams will operate their individual stations. E21IZC will be one
of them. Look for HS5AC to be activated by HS1NIV and other
students at Chiang Mai University. QSL via W1ZS. Other stations
to enter will be: HS0AC (QSL Manager HS0/G3NOM), HS7AS (QSL to P.
O. Box 7, Sripachan, Suphanburi 72140, THAILAND) and HS8AS (QSL
to CBA).
NEW 10 METER BEACON. Alberto,
LU1DZ, GACW Coordinator, reports that on December 7th, during the
Martin, LU4XS, 77th birthday, he will be visiting Martin in the
southern part of Tierra del Fuego Island to join with Jorge,
LU7XP, in the installation of the new GACW beacon. The location
will be Moat Ranch, Moat River and Beagle Channel (150 km. west
of Ushuaia city in Tierra del Fuego Province). The transmit
frequency will be 28.190 kHz. The beacon will send out a 45
second message saying, "LU4XS GACW LAT LONG and
LOCATOR", every 90 seconds. The power will be 3/4 watts
output and the antenna is an inverted VEE (9 meters high). Every
correct report of the message will be confirmed with a postal
card. Please send your card via bureau or to: GACW, Box 9, 1875 -
Wilde, Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA
NH4, MIDWAY ISLAND. Ted, NH6YK,
will be back on Midway from December 20th to January 2nd, as
NH4/NH6YK. He will have more time to operate than on his last two
trips. Activity will be on HF SSB and 6 meters. There is a slight
possibility of RTTY. QSL via the home call.
P4, ARUBA. Ed, KR3I, will be
operating as P40I from December 1-8th. His activity will be on
40-10 meters and also 80 meters, if there is an antenna
available. Operations will be mostly CW with some SSB in the
general bands depending on condx. QSL via KR3I/bureau (He will be
getting cards printed after his trip!)
PY, BRAZIL. Alex, PY1KS, states
to look for him in the CQWW CW Contest as a Single Operator/All
Band Low Power (SOLPAB) entry.
QSL INFO AND NEWS.......
OOOPPPPSSS! I guess we jumped the gun last week. The logs
for the BQ9P aren't up just quite yet. Steve, KU9C, is
typing furiously to have them on-line as soon as
possible. Stay tuned! Also, the URL address we published
last week was missing the first two slashes. The address
should be: http://www.qsl.net/bq9p/
The QSL manager of B1Z for CQWW CW and the SSB Contest is
JA4HCK.
NEW QSL MANAGER. The team of RM6A now reports that they
have a QSL Manager and this is Joe, W3HNK. Joe will be
able to provide QSLs for the 1998 CQWW CW Contest and
after. For all contests before the 1998 CQWW CW Contest
must be QSLed to: Sam Dubovtsev, P.O.BOX 600, KRASNODAR,
350062, RUSSIA
NEW QSL MANAGER. Zoli, HA1AG, informs OPDX that he is the
QSL Manager of Chuck, T32NCC. Chuck lives on Fanning
Island (OC-084). His operation has been approved by the
IOTA Committee. The QSL cards have been printed and Zoli
has received the first logs from Chuck. Please send your
QSL requests to: Zoli Pitman, Somogyi Bela ut 18, Gyor
9024, Hungary. In the last two editions of the RAC,
Zoli's zip code was given as 9300. It's wrong! QSL
requests sent without SASE or via the bureau will be
answered via the bureau. Anything in excess of the needed
return postage will be sent to Chuck to improve his
conditions. 1 USD or 1 IRC covers the return postage.
Donations of any kind would be gratefully appreciated and
will be forwarded to Chuck, T32NCC. He must make frequent
repairs to his equipment due to the harsh environment.
He's using a 4 year old TS-50, which is already rusting
internally. His primary need is equipment: antennas,
coax, connectors, etc. Zoli can arrange shipping. Please
note that there is no E-mail and not even a telephone on
Fanning Island. The mail is picked up every 3-4 weeks by
cruise ships and taken to Hawaii. After Zoli receives the
logs, he will send out the cards within a couple of days.
V6, MICRONESIA. The "DX
News Letter" reports that Ann/WA1S/V63HO,
Charlotte/KQ1F/V63HC, and Paul/K1XM/V63YP, are on Kosrae Island
(OC-059) from now until November 30th. Look for them to be on
Pohnpei (OC-010) from November 30th until December 3rd and on
Truk Island (OC-011) from December 3-9th. They will sign V63X
during the CQWWDX CW. All QSLs via KQ1F.
VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND (Now
active). Remember to look for Nick, VK2ICV, to be active from
here as VK9LX during the CQWW CW Contest. The team that is there
will be active now until December 1st. Reportedly, they have two
stations up and working. Operations will be on 160-6 meters on
CW, SSB and RTTY. Their Web site which contains propagation
forecast is at: http://qsl.net/vk9lx/.
QSL via VK2ICV, Nick Hacko, Box 730, Parramatta, NSW 2124,
Australia.
VR2, HONG KONG. Look for Frank,
DL3MFN, to be active as VR2FD or VR98FD for the next 2 years.
Activity will be mainly 17 meters and 15 meters. QSL via DL3MFN
to the DARC bureau.
XT, BURKINA FASO. Michel/F5RLE
and Joel/F5AOW will be active in the new year between February
7th and March 1st, as XT2DW (on SSB) and XT2DM (on CW),
respectively. They will be active mostly on WARC bands. QSL via
F5RLE.
XZ1N, MYANMAR (Update). The
station XZ1N has reportedly logged a little over 7,000 QSOs as
this bulletin was being prepared. There will be another 7
operators arriving on Friday, November 27th, to augment the 5
that have been operating and constructing the stations. They are
currently running 3 stations, and will have the 4th up and
running on Friday. Remember to look for them during the contest
this weekend.
ZK3, TOKELAU ISLANDS. Lee,
3D2VA, reportedly has talked to Ron, ZL1AMO, during this past
week, and states that Ron is going to try and go to Tokelau again
sometime in December. Hopefully transportation will not fall
through this time.
ZP, PARAGUAY. Tom, ZP5AZL,
reports to OPDX that he will be active in the ARRL 10 Meter
Contest December 12-13th, with the callsign ZP5Z (HP). QSL via
W3HNK.
ZS3, SOUTH AFRICA (Operation
Cancelled). Edwin, ZS5BBO, reports to OPDX that his planned
expedition to ZS3 (refer to OPDX.378) from Kimberley, the
"City of Diamonds", in December has been postponed. He
states that he needs a break from all the Amateur Radio
activities/events that he has been participating in since the
CQWW SSB Contest and also ZS75SIG operation. He wants a break
without amateur radio during his Christmas holiday. Edwin will,
however, go to ZS3 during 1999 sometime and has kept the callsign
ZS3MM. He is very sorry if he had put up the hopes of many
operators who were wanting to work him from the ZS3 area. Also,
Edwin sends a note of thanks to all the operators who have
supported the ZS75SIG special event station. This call will still
be used until the end of November, 1998. QSL cards will only be
sent out in late January, 1999, due to him leaving on holiday in
mid-December.
