3V, TUNISIA. Fabio, I4UFH, will be active
from the 3V8BB club station July 8-11th, and will also be in the
IARU Contest as a Single Op/Phone entry. Emphasis will be on the
low band and 10 meters for the USA and Asian stations. Outside
the contest the activity will be mainly on the WARC band and 2
meters (depending upon antenna availability). QSL to I4UFH via
the bureau/direct. He will ONLY confirm these QSOs and the Jan
7th, 1999 operation.
3Y, BOUVET. The "DX News Sheet"
reports that 3Y5NT was active on June 14th, at 0250z on 14003 kHz
CW giving the QSL info via W3HNK. However, Joe, W3HNK, does not
know anything about the station!

the upcoming IARU Contest (July 10-11th). Operators Kenny/K2KW,
Bob/N6TV and Will/K6KM will be entering the contest as a
Multi-Single class and will be active on 80-10 meters CW/SSB.

AMATEUR GROUPS ATTEMPTING TRANS-ATLANTIC 2M CONTACT.
The following are excerpts from a press release by Paul, VO1HE
(All OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the complete release
as an additional). Beginning on June 26th and continuing until
July 4th, 1999, a group in Scotland led by Bill, GM0ICF, will be
operating from Ardnamurchan Light House on Ardnamurchan Point,
the most westerly point in the mainland British Isles, in an
attempt to make the first transatlantic 2-way contact on 144 MHz.
Operating from the North American side will be a group led by
Paul, VO1HE, operating from Cabot Tower, the site where Marconi
received the first transatlantic signal in 1901. The operating
frequency on 2 meters will be 144.075 MHz plus/minus interference
and at 15-18 wpm CW. Operating times will be between 1200-2000z
daily for the entire period but most likely not the entire 8
hours per day. The callsign of the Scottish station will be
2S0ICF/P and the call of the Canadian station will be VO1AA. The
groups are trying to win the Irish Radio Transmitters Society's
"Brendan Trophies", which will be awarded to the first
two stations to make a verified contact across the Atlantic Ocean
using 144-146 MHz without aid of man-made reflectors, repeaters
or moon bounce. For more information on the Brendan Trophies and
the rules, check out the URL address: http://www.irts.ie/brendan.htm.
A9, BAHRAIN (Update). "The Daily
DX" reports that David, A92GE, is saying Regi, ON4CFI, who
is active until July 7th as A9/ON4CFI, is not authorized to
operate. The reason given is there is not a reciprocal licensing
arrangement in Bahrain and A9/homecall callsigns are not
permitted.
HC, ECUADOR. Reports indicate that Ted, HC5K,
is now active on 6 meters using an IC-706 and two 6 element
yagis. No QSNs have been reported. QSL direct.

OPERATOR(S) NEEDED. Mats/5X1Z/SM7PKK and
Nils/SM6CAS report (in a press release) that they still need one
more (possibly two) operator(s) for their DXpedition. Their
primary target is T31 Kanton, a place that is still very high on
the most wanted lists around the world. Their secondary target is
ZK3 Tokelau, a small but often bypassed island that has yet never
seen a big multi-operator DXpedition. The initial itinerary is as
follows: T31 September 23rd - October 3rd (1999); ZK3 October 7th
- October 12th (1999). They intend to have three stations with
1KW. These will be manned by 6 operators. There will be beams for
the all the higher bands including the WARC bands and verticals
for the low bands. The rough budget for this DXpedition is about
30,000 USD not counting the personal tickets and hotels to the
takeoff site for the DXpedition. The DXpedition is looking for
additional funds from Clubs and Foundations. If interested,
please contact Nils via E-mail at: nils.sm6cas@swipnet.se.
All OPDX InterNet Subscribers will receive the complete press
release by Nils as an additional bulletin.

of Fyn (IOTA EU-029). Their suggested frequencies will be around
(+/-QRM) 50.173 MHz, 144.173 MHz or 144.273 MHz and 432.173 MHz.
The team will consist of OZ2EW, OZ4CQ, OZ6CQ, OZ6OM/OZ7M, OZ9CQ
and possibly others (All are qualifed VHF DXers).

The logs for the June CY9SS St. Paul
Island DXpedition are now available at the Web Site: http://dx.qsl.net/logs.
"NEVER GIVE UP!", states
Marco, IK0DWN. Marco reports to OPDX, "Yesterday
(June 23rd) I found in my letterbox the return QSL for a
contact that I made with SV9AKI in 1990. My SAE was still
in pretty good conditions, considering that it's been
hanging around for 9 years!"
SECRETARY SELECTED FOR IREF. A press release
by Mike, AD5A, dated June 21, 1999, reports: "Bob Nadolny,
WB2YQH, has been selected as Secretary for the Island Radio
Expedition Foundation, Inc. Bob is the editor of The 599 Report
and is an avid DXer and Island Chaser. IREF should benefit from
Bob's experience. The Island Radio Expedition Foundation, Inc.,
was founded to raise funds in support of amateur radio
expeditions to rare and new islands qualifying for the IOTA
award. The Foundation has begun accepting donations and more
information can be found at the Web site: http://www.sat.net/~iref.
TF, ICELAND. Bob, W2SF, informs OPDX that he
would like to announce his planned trip to Keflavik, Iceland,
August 26th through September 6th. This will be a Single Op all
band (80-10 meters plus the WARC bands) operation on CW/SSB/RTTY.
He has the license W2SF/TF and the airline tickets. His equipment
will be a TS-850s, lap top computer, R7 vertical and g5rv all
band dipole. QSL to his home callsign.
WELL KNOWN DXER ARRESTED. Information from
several sources being passed around indicate that a Japanese
newspaper called "Asahi Shimbun" reported that Zorro
Miyazawa, JH1AJT, and Hirohiko Daikoku, JG3QCW, were arrested on
June 16th. The reason given was that in 1995 Zorro allegedly had
let Hirohiko take the second class license test for him using
false identification. At the 1999 New Orleans International DX
Conventions, last month, Zorro was announced as "DXer of the
Year" because of his activities as 7O1A, XW30/XW30A,
A51/JH1AJT, XU1A, XW8KPL, E31A etc. During the 1998 Visalia
International DX Convention Zorro announced that he had been
invited back to the Kingdom of Bhutan for another DXpedition.
This operation was originally scheduled for early 1999 and has
yet to happen.
ZC4, U.K. SOV. BASE AREAS ON CYPRUS. If you
missed last Saturday's activity by ZC4ATC (by Alf/5B4AFB,
George/5B4AGC and Ian/5B4YX) you may have another chance this
coming Wednesday, June 30th. Alf, 5B4AFB, will be there for his
usual monthly club meeting. Begin looking for him starting around
1700z for about 3-4 hours.
ZD8, ASCENSION ISLAND. As reported in last
week's bulletin, Paul Hutley, KF4OOX, is now active as ZD8V and
is looking for a few states to finish his WAS. Paul planned to be
active during last weekend's "Field Day" and is looking
for the following states: Hawaii, Idaho, Oklahoma, South Dakota,
Utah and Wyoming. However, Paul informed your editor this past
week of some "Bad News". Paul has reported that his
antenna is broke and "needs some TLC". He has lost the
ability to tune the 15m band and the 12m band is not very far
behind. Paul states that he will operate Field Day only 10/20
meters (both of which work just great). After "Field
Day", he will take his antenna down. Paul hopes to have it
back up in a week or two at the latest.
