5W, SAMOA (Update/Refer to OPDX.424). Gerard,
PA3AXU, informs OPDX that he will arrive in 5W-land early morning
(local time) September 28th, and he states that he should have
had enough time to sleep during his flights (total travelling
time 29 hours). He states that he will be active on PSK31 and
hopes that Pacific will allow at least some low band activity,
although he will not be taking an amplifier. All equipment and
software has been tested last weekend. Gerard adds, "My XYL
Ria will go with me, but she promised me that she will take
enough books to read, so that the time I can be QRV is
'unlimited'." Activity will last until October 14th. QSL

Cruz. Activity will be mainly 20 meters CW during his evenings
and mornings. Watch for him around 14060 kHz.
EAST TIMOR VOTES FOR INDEPENDENCE. Over the
past weekend the Associated Press reported that the "U.N.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced Friday night what was
apparent all week - that East Timorese had voted in a landslide
to end a quarter-century of often brutal Indonesian rule. U.N.
officials said that 344,580 people, or 78.5 percent, voted to
split with the world's fourth most-populous nation. The news
triggered a violent backlash by anti-independence forces, who had
favored autonomy within Indonesia and had tried to disrupt the
vote by attacking U.N. workers. At least four local U.N. workers
were killed this week and another six were missing and feared
dead." The Indonesian government is expected to respect the
referendum and grant East Timor independence. Stay tuned!
GEARED UP FOR THE CQWW DX CONTESTS. Jim
Neiger, N6TJ, reports, "Once again, 'NEIGER'S TIGERS' is
forming multiple Teams for the upcoming CQWW DX Contest, both SSB
and CW. Just when you thought it safe to return to the
jungle......" Last year's CQ WW SSB, Jim's
"TIGERS" placed 3 teams in the Top Ten, plus a new all
time SSB Team Record. Jim states that he will return to Ascension
Island as ZD8Z for the SSB contest, 10 meters only, and then to
Brazil for the CW contest, also 10 meters only from ZX5J QTH.
HC8, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. HC8N will be
activated in the CQWW RTTY Contest this month as a multi-multi
effort operated by N5KO, W6OTC, K6AW, WF1B, N4GN, W5AP and HC1OT.

HS, THAILAND. "The 59(9) DXReport"
reports that Don, G3VFU (ex A92BE, A45XU), is now active as
HS0/G3VFU and only for an unspecified time. We have seen no QSNs
reported yet, but look for him on SSB. QSL via W3HNK.

LAST CHANCE TO WORK ZD8V. Paul, ZD8V/KF4OOK,
reports: "ZD8V will go QRT on Wednesday, September 8th. I
got to pack up everything and turn it in for shipping on
September 10th. I will try to be on the air as much as I can. I
will be trying to show up on the 247 DX net (14.247 MHz), the
ANNSE Net (14.164 MHz around 0700Z) and the JA DX Net (21.365 MHz
around 2000Z). I am looking for Pacific DXCC places. I am kind of
weak on them. I am also looking for the members of two clubs. The
Mercer Co. ARC in Sharon Pa and the Indian River ARC in Cocoa Fl.
I would like to work as many of the above as I can as well as
working every one else.....On September 8th, I will have to go
QRT then go to work on mid-days and then I will pack up my
computer and ham station. I hope propagation is very good the
next week as I will be spending as much time on the air as I can
and I want to get the most out of the bands." NOTE: Please
see new QSL route for ZD8V down below.
PACIFIC OPERATION UPDATE (T31, Kanton Island and ZK3,
Fakaofo Island). Operator/QSL Manager Lech, LA7MFA,
reports that the "1999 Double Trouble DXpedition" is
right on track, and they expect to have their first team members
in Pago Pago, American Samoa on Tuesday, September 7th. Look for
Steve, KH8/G4EDG, on CW and Nils, KH8/SM6CAS on SSB. QSL via
their home callsign. From September 14-17th, there might be some
additional operation by the rest of the team. Look for
KH8/SM7PKK, KH8/SM0AGD and KH8/KK6HC. QSL via their home callsign
except for the last one which goes to LA7MFA. New updated QSL
routes are now placed on their main Web page at: http://www.qsl.net/t31t.
Lech states that the operating frequencies for the T31 and ZK3
operations can be found on the Web page: http://www.qsl.net/t31t/qrg.html.
A quick look at the site shows the following suggested
frequencies:
Remember the T31T Kanton Island operation will be from
September 23rd through October 3rd. The ZK3DX Fakaofo Island
(Tokelau) operation is scheduled for October 7-12th. Very
shortly, the update news page will be activated at: http://www.qsl.net/t31t/news.html.
There will be no online log on their WEB page! Please do not send
E-mail to the WEB-master. Everything should go to: t31t@qsl.net. Lech mentions that
some of the sponsored money will actually be used to buy supplies
for the locals on Kanton (T31) and Fakaofo (ZK3). There has not
been any supply boats on these islands for months. Lastly, the
team still needs more donations!
PACIFIC OPERATION (ZL1AMO on move again). Ron
Wright, ZL1AMO, will leave New Zealand on September 8th to
operate for one week as 3D2RW from Fiji. After Fiji he will then
spend one week at Samoa and will operate as 5W1CW, if a suitable
location is found. On September 22nd, Ron will leave by ship for
ZK3 and will arrive at Nukunono Atoll September 24/25th. Ron will
stay on the island approx. 4 weeks until the ship returns. Look
for Ron to be active mainly on CW and the lower bands, especially
160 meters.
QSL INFO AND NEWS...
Jim Smith, VK9NS, reports to OPDX that
he will be leaving Norfolk Island soon, and the QSLing
will stop until he gets back. He wants us to tell
everyone to "Please ask the guys/gals not to
re-QSL." Jim is due back on Norfolk Island in mid
November. By the way, Jim has been working some RTTY and
is really enjoying PSK31.
The new address for QSLs for ZD8V is as
follows: Paul L Hutley, 298 Logan Ave., Sharon, Pa 16146.
Paul informs OPDX that, "This is my parents' address
and will be a good one for a long time to come. I don't
know how long they will forward my mail from my address
from Ascension to my parents address in Sharon Pa., so I
would like to get everything moving that way now so I
don't have to worry about missing mail."
It has been reported that Abdollah,
EP2FM, states that he is not receiving all the envelopes
that he should and is having a difficult time cashing in
IRCs. He states most postal workers in Iran have not
heard of IRCs, and currently one IRC is not enough for
one stamp to send a letter to a country like the USA and
Canada. However, he still prefers IRCs over green stamps
because they seem to make it through the mail better.
Abdollah's E-mail address is: as@neda.net.
Alan, VK4AAR, reports that the
Australian Overseas Postal Charges **WILL RISE
DRAMATICALLY** in the immediate future. Please act
accordingly.
L27DIR special event station active May
16-23rd to celebrate the "75th Anniversary of the
World Record of Distance" should be QSLed to LU7DIR
via the bureau or direct to: Jose E. Campos, P.O. Box 26,
1650 San Martin, Bs. Aires, ARGENTINA.
QSL 9M2K via QSL Manager 9M2AA as per
Callbook and QRZ.COM. This was a special event station in
Port Dickson, Malaysia in commemoration of year 2000
(Y2K) by the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters'
Society. There will be a special commemorative QSL card
issued for the event.
T8, PALAU. Toshi/JA6QXW and Mac/JA1OYP will
be active as T88XW and T88XX, respectively from September
12-15th. Activity will be on 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6 meters. HF
power will be 500W and on 6m 200W(?) with beam antennas. QSL
T88XW via JA6QXW and T88XX via JA1OYP.
VP2, MONTSERRAT '99 DX-PEDITION. A press
release by Josep, EA3BT, reports that an operation will take
place October 22-30th. Team members Josep/EA3BT and Nuria/EA3WL
(YL station) will use the callsign VP2MBT and VP2MGL. Activity
will be on 80/40/30/20/17/15/12/10 meters SSB, RTTY and some CW.
Josep states, "Because of the last eruption of the
Soufrieres volcano on the island of Montserrat that happened in
1997, the radio amateur activity from the island has been very
poor. This is the reason why we think that it is convenient to
organize a DXpedition that covers the demand over this DXCC
country. Our aim is to be active in the maximum number of bands
and modes, attending the requests that can be done to us."
QSL via EA3BT. An online log search will be available and is
under construction at: http://www.qsl.net/ea3bt.
ZF2, CAYMAN ISLANDS. Look for Steve, W7TZ, to
sign ZF2CQ now through September 18th. This will be a SSB only
operation. QSL is via W7TZ direct.
ZS5, SOUTH AFRICA. Edwin, ZS5BBO, reports
that he will be active in the upcoming CQWW DX SSB Contest as a
single station on a single band signing ZS5T.
