and ZS6BXN for the following DX information.
MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR (Tedd, KB8NW): Sorry
for the shortness of this week's bulletin. The editor's E-mail
system (BARF80) developed a problem Friday afternoon and NO
E-mail was being delivered. Outgoing mail is working. If you sent
something to OPDX, and do not see it in this week's bulletin,
please try again. LAST MINUTE UPDATE! As of Sunday, January 9th,
around 2300z my E-mail system was restored. However, I was
informed that all E-mail sent between Friday afternoon and late
Sunday is probably lost.
3XY, GUINEA. Robert, 3XY1B0 (ed. yes, this
callsign is correct), in Conakey, was active this past week on 15
meters CW on 21035 kHz between 1630 and 1730z. QSL via F5XX.
3Z8, POLAND. Members of the Polish Radio S.A.
in Lublin, southeast Poland (KO11GG) will be active using the
special callsign 3Z8IMA. Activity is to commemorate "welfare
action to bring help in winter to the poor familyless
children", and will be active until January 31st. Look for
activity by the special station on 160-10 meters CW, SSB, RTTY
and AMTOR. This station was spotted this was wekend on 14270 kHz
between 1000 and 1500z. QSL via SP8YCB, via the bureau or direct
(SP8YCB Club Station, PO Box 403, 20950 Lublin, Poland).
5Z, KENYA (IOTA DXpedition Update). Phil,
G3SWH, informs OPDX that they have finalized the dates and made
the necessary airline and hotel bookings for their forthcoming
DXpedition to Wasini Island in Kenya (IOTA AF-67). The team will
consist of six, experienced DX operators: Jim/G3RTE, David/G3UNA,
Phil/G3SWH, Rob/5Z4RL, Ian/5Z4IC and Graham/5Z4GS. They plan to
be active between March 8-15th with two stations, one on CW and
the other on SSB on a 24 hour a day basis using the special
callsign of 5Z4WI. Propagation permitting, they expect to operate
on all bands from 160 to 10 meters, with the exception of 30
meters, which is not presently permitted in Kenya. They have an
expedition target of 15,000 QSOs. QSLs will be handled by G3SWH,
either direct (QTHR) or via the RSGB bureau.
8P6, BARBADOS. "The 59(9) DXReport"
reports that Richard, G3RWL, will be active February 14-28th as
8P6DR while on holiday. He will be on 20-10 meters, mainly during
his early mornings and late evenings. QSL via G3RWL.
9N7UD NOW QRT (Wrap-up). Charlie, K4VUD, left
Nepal as of January 6th. He wants to thank everyone who worked
him as XW1UD, HS0ZCW, and 9N7UD. He mentions that there seemed to
be more noise there this time than last time, and 160 meters is a
NO NO. If there is to be a real 160/80 meters effort from
9N-land, it will have to be well outside Kathmandu using super
antennas and a really BIG linear. Charlie states that his Laos
(XW) operation was a joy due to a remote location lacking noise.
However, propagation was closed down during the daylight hours.
He will order the QSL cards this week. Lastly, Chalie also
mentions that his HS0ZCW was also a real joy due to the use of
the big station at HS1CHB, with the TH-7 and TH-6 on roof of a 15
story apartment building. Donations to 9N hams have been
delivered except for FT-901DM which they held back for fear of
seizure in the KTM airplane hijacking aftermath at the same
airport. 9N1AC now has the TS-430, a keyer, a tuner, and a G5RV
as well as dipoles. Charlie mentions that 9N1AC's incoming mail
has been repeatedly slit open, so he is resigned to get a QSL
Manager. Volunteer via Carl, N4AA. 9N1AA's FT-757GX receiver went
dead recently, so he will use the donated ICOM IC-706MkII until
other one is fixed. He will also use the IC-706MkII to try
satellite since he now has a satellite antenna too. All mics,
power supplies, keyers, keys, etc, are being used by all 9N
individuals until they will be brought back to a central spot for
the 9N1MM memorial club station. The club license has been
applied for but it may come out as 9N0MM (zero) due to new Nepali
call area zones and club callsign designation. Charlie sends out
a huge thanks to all who generously donated gear or green stamps
which went for Heil headset and complete adapter set, coax,
tuner, Nye Morse keys, and lots of other gear. There are smiles
all around among the Nepal hams, and there are at least four
regular operators on the bands: 9N1AA, 9N1HA, and 9N1AC, and
9N2AA.
9U, BURUNDI. Leif, SM0BFJ/SM5BFJ, reports
that Gus, 9U5D, will go back to Burundi on the 8th of January and
should be active for 3 more months. Activity will be on all bands
160-6 meters. QSL via SM0BFJ/SM5BFJ (Only direct, please).
HL0, SOUTH KOREA (IOTA DXpedition). Claude
(no callsign mentioned), a student of Yonsei University in Seoul,
Korea and a major of electronics engineering, informs OPDX that
the members of the "Yonsei Amateur Radio Research
Association" (YARRA) will go on a DXpedition to Kanghwa
Island (IOTA AS-105, Kyonggido Province group) from January
13-18th. Their callsign will be HL0Y/2. Kanghwa Island is located
in Zone 25 and ITU 44 in the Kyonggido Province of Korea, 100Km
West of Seoul, the capital. Activity will be on CW/SSB, 80, 40,
20, 15 and 10 meters. Claude mentions that they will use a
TS-450s, TS-440s, IC-735 and a 3OL-1 linear amplfier into dipole
antennas for 80 and 40 meters, and a TH7DX 7 element tri-band
Yagi for 20, 15 and 10 meters band. Operators will be (no
callsigns given): Claude, Jong and Indy (for CW/SSB); and Byuk
and Zeo (for SSB only). QSL via the bureau to HL0Y, home callsign
or directly to: YARRA, Yonsei University, 134 Shinchon-dong
Seodaemoon-gu, Seoul, South Korea
HUNTING LIONS IN THE AIR CONTEST. Dave,
ZS6BXN, wants to remind everyone that the 29th "Hunting
Lions In The Air" contest will take place over the weekend
of January 15-16th. This contest is held in memory of the founder
of Lionism - MELVIN JONES - his birthdate is the 13th of January.
All are welcome and all that is required is a signal report plus
a serial number. Bands to be used are 80/40/20/15/10 meters SSB
only. The contest starts at 0000z January 15th and ends at 2400z
January 16th. For more information, check the Web site at: http://www.jhb.lia.net/midrand-lions/hlita.html.
II0, ITALY. It has been reported that
amateurs living in Rome may substitute the prefix II0 for their
regular prefix (I0, IK0. IW0, IZ0) for the "Jubilee
Year" until December 24, 2000. QSL via regular Italian
callsign.
MILLENNIUM ACTIVITY. "The Daily DX"
reports that the members of the KARL Branch office of Pohang
(HL0FDU) have been given special permission to use the callsign
D90TKY (Two Kilo Year) to celebrate the Millennium. Look for this
station to be active throughout 2000. OPDX has found that the
QSNs show this station has been active on 15 meters SSB around
21270 kHz after 2300z. QSL via direct to DS5UCP or via the bureau
to HL0FDU.
QSL INFO AND NEWS...
OOOPPPSS! Ben, PA5BW, reports the
following: "On request of Eddy, 5R8FT, a direct
collegue of Solofo at Radio Netherlands Madagascar I have
informed several address databases and DX-bulletins that
the ONLY address for both stations was Box 404,
Antananarivo, Madagascar. But it appears that Eddy didn't
know about the manager for Solofo (?!?). So I spread
incorrect information, while convinced I was doing
something good. So the real situation is: Solofo
Randrenjason, 5R8ET, QSL via K1WY Eddy Rahamefy, 5R8FT,
P.O.Box 404, Antananarivo-101, Madagascar My
apologies....." Ben Witvliet, PA5BW
Vic, EA5YN, reports that the QSLs from
the 3C0R operation have been received, and they will
begin confirming them about January 10th.
NOT THE MANAGER. Art, K1VKO, reports
that he just received about 2 pounds of cards from the W1
QSL Bureau addressed to him as the QSL manager for 9K2RR.
PLEASE pass the word around "K1VKO is not the QSL
Manager for 9K2RR, and has never been the QSL Manager for
9K2RR." If someone gives K1VKO as the QSL Manager
you worked a pirate. Art states that this has been going
on for about 5 years now.
NEW MANAGER. Igor, EU1EU, informs OPDX
that his QSL Manager Valdas, LY1BA, will no longer be his
manager as of 12/31/1999. All QSLs will be return from
LY1BA as of January, 2000. Please, send all QSLs for Igor
(EU1EU, EV5M, EU930EU, UC2ABO and LY/UC2ABO) ONLY to
EU1EU. The route is direct to: P.O. Box 143, Minsk-5,
220005, BELARUS. Also, you can send QSL via the bureau.
WARNING! Igor has had problems with the national QSL
bureau in 97-98 and has not received QSL cards from the
bureau in these years.
NEW MANAGER. Igor, EU1EU, reports that
the manager for the "AGB Awards and Trophies"
has been changed for amateur radio operators outside of
ex-USSR. Valdas, LY1BA, was the manager up through
12/31/1999. The new manager for the "AGB Awards and
Trophies" for amateurs outside of ex-USSR is
Remigijus, LY2MW (P.O. Box 1029, Vilnius 2001,
LITHUANIA). Igor states that a manager outside of Belarus
is necessary due to the mail theft by postal workers.
Communication between EU1EU and LY2MW will now be via the
InterNet, telephone and personal contacts. For more
information about the rules of "AGB Awards and
Trophies" and details on the
"AGB-DX-Rating", check out the Web site at: http://www.qsl.net/eu1eu.
Julio, EA5XX, reports that he is the QSL
Manager of Yuri, XE1NVX, who has now changed his callsign
to XE1UN and can now confirm both XE1NVX and XE1UN. He is
also the manager for: CN8NK, CN8KD, FO0SAL, CO8LF, ED5WPX
and EG5TID. By the way, Julio is one of the operators
going to Myanmar this week and will be part of the XZ0A
team.
Dave, NU4N, reports that he will not be
the QSL Manager for Mats/LU9AY effective the end of
January, 2000. Mats other callsigns were L29AY and
CP6/LU9AY. Dave states that he will honor direct and
bureau cards up to the 31st of January but will not
accept any cards after that date.
Tex, 9M2TO, reports to OPDX that he has
sent all QSLs for contacts made before December 31, 1999,
to the JARL Bureau. He also adds that between 1995 and
2000 he has made 95045 QSOs (60540/CW, 32059/SSB,
2419/RTTY). Tex wants to remind everyone to look for him
to make contacts for the "DXCC 2000 Millennium
Award". All QSLs are automatically sent through the
JARL Bureau 100%.
SPECIAL EVENT STATION. Art, SP3CW, reports
that he and other members of the Polish Amateur Radio Union (PZK)
have been active since January 1st using the special callsign
HF70PZK to celebrate their organization's 70th anniversary. Their
activity seems to be mainly on CW. Check 14023 and 21010 kHz
after 1300z. Also, check 80 meters (around 3510) between 2200 and
0300z. Look for them on 40 or 30 meters between 1330 and 1530z.
QSL via the Bureau or via SP3CW: Artur Topczewski, Kolbego 48,
64-115 Swieciechowa, POLAND.

January. QSL via F5LBL: Gerard Karpe, 629 Route de Montpellier,
F-30800 Saint Gilles, France.
VP9, BERMUDA (Slight additions). As reported

VP9/KE0UI. Activity will be CW and SSB on 80-10 meters with some
activity in the NAQSO party on the 8th. QSL is to the home
callsign CBA (preferred) or the stateside Zero Bureau. A Web site
for this operation can be viewed at: http://hometown.aol.com/bnorth9083/myhomepage/index.html.
